PBA Imports Explained: How the Conferences Differ

By Kadario Team

One of the things that makes the Philippine Basketball Association different from many leagues is that the rules on foreign players change from one conference to the next. If you are new to the PBA, knowing when teams can use an import, and how many, helps the whole season make sense.

A season of conferences

A PBA season is split into separate tournaments called conferences, each with its own elimination round, playoffs and champion. In recent seasons there have usually been three: the Philippine Cup, the Commissioner's Cup and the Governors' Cup. The order and exact format can change from season to season, so it is worth checking the league's announcements each year.

What an "import" is

In PBA terms, an import is a foreign reinforcement player, usually a professional from abroad, signed by a team for a single conference. Imports are often the main offensive option on their teams and can play heavy minutes. Teams can also replace an import during a conference, within the league's rules, if a player is injured or not working out.

The Philippine Cup: all-Filipino

The Philippine Cup is the all-Filipino conference. Teams play without imports, using only their local rosters. It is the oldest and, for many fans, the most prestigious of the three titles, because it shows which franchise has the best local core.

Because there are no imports, games in the Philippine Cup often look different. Teams rely more on depth, local big men and ball movement, and rotations tend to be spread more evenly across the roster. You can follow the current Philippine Cup standings and live scores on the Kadario PBA Philippine Cup page.

The import conferences

In the Commissioner's Cup and the Governors' Cup, teams are allowed to bring in an import. Normally each team may field one import at a time.

The league has often used a height limit for imports in at least one of these conferences, so teams cannot simply sign the tallest player available. The exact limit has changed many times over the years, and some conferences have had no height cap at all. Because the numbers change, the safest approach is to check the rules the PBA announces for that specific conference rather than assume last season's limit still applies.

Over the years the league has also invited guest teams from outside the Philippines to some import conferences, which adds another variety to the schedule.

Why the rules change by conference

Alternating between all-Filipino and import tournaments serves a few purposes. The all-Filipino conference develops and showcases local talent. The import conferences raise the level of competition, bring in new styles of play, and give teams a way to cover weaknesses in their rosters. Height limits in some conferences are meant to keep things balanced so that local big men still play an important role.

What this means when you watch

The short version

The Philippine Cup is all-Filipino. The Commissioner's Cup and Governors' Cup allow imports, usually one per team on the floor and sometimes under a height limit set for that conference. Check each conference's announced rules, and enjoy how differently the same teams can play from one tournament to the next.
